In ancient Rome, people watched gladiators fight to the death for entertainment. During the Black Death, the plague killed about one third of Europe’s population. In medieval times, some people were buried alive by mistake because doctors couldn’t always tell if someone was truly dead. Viking warriors sometimes used cats as gifts for brides because cats were linked to their goddess of love. In the 1800s, children worked in dangerous factories and mines for very little pay.
