FEMINIST critique, from the Querelle des Femmes to the present, has arisen in opposition to the dominant discourse's construction of woman and gender relations, has been shaped by that dis- course's positive and negative definitions of women and woman's place,1 and has repeatedly been vulnerable to appropriation by that which it opposes. Equally, during its long history, feminist critique has been capable of reconstituting itself, of fighting new kinds ofoppression with new weapons. Today, in Am
