These schools served the Chinese and Indian communities, teaching students in their mother tongue—Mandarin or Tamil. They played an important role in preserving cultural identity and traditions, while also improving literacy among these ethnic groups. However, they also created a form of separation, as students were educated based on language and ethnicity.”
