Nijo Castle, built in 1603 as the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, is famous for its ornate interiors, beautiful gardens, and its ‘nightingale floors’ — wooden floors that chirp like birds when walked upon, designed to alert residents to intruders.
