Historically, Haiti underwent massive deforestations under French colonial rule, as the agricultural industry, the primary economy, would mainly focus on enriching its colonial rulers through the production of profitable resources such as coffee, sugarcane, indigo, and tobacco. At one point, Haiti was responsible for producing 60% of all coffee consumed in Europe.
