Anne cowered as Şerban grew nearer. She could go no further, trapped on the edge of the bed. Why did he look so much older all of a sudden? His visage had altered. His face appeared, to Anne, like a canvas hacked with the history of a man who’d engaged in years of slaughter and warfare. A monstrous, evil hunger blazed in his eyes, Anne thought, a hunger that could only be satiated by spilling blood and reveling in suffering. Anne averted her eyes, unable to bear the sight, her mind entering
