Molecules encoded in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) perform the function of displaying peptides derived from protein antigens. MHC genes are highly polymorphic. Their major products are class I and class II MHC molecules, which contain peptide-binding clefts, where the polymorphic residues are concentrated, and invariant regions, which bind the coreceptors CD8 and CD4, respectively.
