A Penrose drain is a passive, soft, and malleable drain that works by gravity and capillary action to allow fluid to exit the wound without active suction. The exit site is usually positioned at the most ventral point to ensure proper drainage. For example, a Penrose drain may be used after an abdominal surgery to help remove fluid from the surgical site and promote healing.
