She went to the roof of the Guard Tower – though this one was not really a tower, it was a rectangular building in which the lower-ranked and lesser-paid guards were housed, near enough the real Guard Towers and the city walls to feel like it was one too. The roof was tilted, but a straight walking path went around it, enclosed by railing made of smooth sand-coloured stones. She sat on the path so that she overlooked the city towards the sea. That is where the sun will rise. The sky was a faint,
