Long before European settlers arrived, the forests, rivers, and swamps of the region were the home of the Wampanoag people. For generations, they lived in harmony with the land, hunting, fishing, and tending crops. The area now called the Bridgewater Triangle was considered sacred, particularly the Hockomock Swamp, whose name translates to “Place where Spirits Dwell” or “The Devil’s Place.”
