The climate is extreme: cloudless skies, heavy snow, thunderstorms, and pestilent desert winds. Fertile areas like Mazandaran yield rice, sugar, grapes, olives. Wildlife includes wild asses, antelopes, goats, lions and tigers. Domestic animals: oxen, sheep, horses and camels.
