Shizuka was hiding in the cornfield when one of the creeps found her, drooling like a rabid dog. To him, being alone with a young girl in the middle of nowhere was his "grand prize." He was tired of being a broke, lonely loser. Flashback to his job at a restaurant: he was slow, had the memory of a goldfish, and was dumb enough to smoke in the kitchen.
