Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, turning everything the color of old bone. It was 2:17 AM. The night shift ME, Dr. Sarah Chen, didn’t ask why an FBI agent needed private access to a three-day-old corpse at two in the morning. She’d seen Carter’s badge before. The black one.
