He was a German painter and printmaker, and was one of the first Expressionists, a movement involving the distortion of landscapes to portray moods, emotions, and ideas. He studied to become a woodcarver and illustrator in his 20s, later being rejected from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1898.
