The black cat. This is the strangest yet most ordinary story I am about to tell, and I neither expect nor ask anyone to believe it. I would have to be completely out of my mind to think anyone could accept it, when even my own senses refuse to confirm what I know to be true. Yet I am not insane, and I am not dreaming.
