Once the bandage is in place, proper maintenance is essential. Check the dressing frequently and replace it as often as needed, depending on the amount of drainage. Monitor the patient for signs of infection, including redness, swelling, foul odor, or excessive discharge. Since a Penrose drain is passive, the amount of fluid is estimated rather than measured. If necessary, use an E-collar to prevent the patient from chewing or dislodging the drain
