In 2020, the city of Shibuya launched a project called The Tokyo Toilet — commissioning 17 world-renowned architects and designers, including Tadao Andō and Kengo Kuma, to redesign 17 public restrooms across the district. The brief was simple: make people want to go inside. One design uses glass walls that turn opaque when the door is locked. Another is shaped like a forest. The project reframed the public toilet not as infrastructure — but as public art.
