However, there is a brightly lit stage at the center of this theater, governed by our attention. The information that makes it onto this stage—a sight, a sound, a thought, a memory—is 'broadcast' to the entire audience of unconscious processors backstage. This globally available information is what we experience as our stream of consciousness. In this view, consciousness is a supremely functional tool. It’s a mechanism for integrating and sharing information for complex, non-routine problem-solv
