Headlights emerged in the tunnel, growing brighter until the train roared into the station, brakes screaming. The doors slid open. Daniel stepped inside. So did the woman. The carriage was entirely empty. He took a seat near the center, glancing upward as the doors shut. The woman took a seat at the far end, her back to him. There was something about her posture—too erect, too stiff—that made his skin tingle. The train lurched forward. Silence filled the carriage, interrupted only by the
