One of the singers had good taste. She hadn’t been there for some weeks, and turning around, with a glass in her hand, she observed the little changes they have made. There was more mess now that the communions leading up to the Judgment Day had begun, more bottles and glasses on the table, more misplaced things, somebody’s brooch, dented at the side, left on the windowsill.
