May 1896: The Treaty of Addis Ababa. Italy recognized Ethiopia’s full sovereignty. No protectorate. No colony. News shook Europe. Menelik and Tayitu didn’t stop. From 1896 to 1906, they modernized: the first railway to Djibouti, the first bank, the first modern schools, Menelik II Hospital, telegraph lines, and a national postal system.
