Wiring a Room The wires inside the walls are usually hidden. They run from the consumer unit to sockets and switches. For safety, wires are placed inside plastic tubes called conduits. The conduit protects the wire. It also makes it easier to pull new wires later. Wires come in different colors. In many places, the live wire is brown or red. The neutral wire is blue or black. The earth wire is green and yellow. The earth wire is for safety. It carries electricity away if something goes wrong.
