SSPs typically provide a range of services in addition to needle exchange. These include education about overdose prevention and treatment (including distribution of naloxone, used to reverse opioid overdose); referral to substance use disorder treatment programs and social and mental health programs; health care services such as screenings and treatment for STIs (including viral hepatitis and HIV); and vaccinations.
