Assamese shares almost the same script as Bengali, and that resemblance is exactly why generic Bengali text-to-speech mangles it: Assamese uses distinct letters — its own ৰ (ra) and ৱ (va) — and, far more importantly, it has a velar fricative sound written where Bengali would read an 's' or 'sh', so the Assamese letters শ, ষ and স are commonly pronounced as a throaty /x/ that exists in no other major Indian language.
