The standard language also retains pitch accent in its more conservative varieties and has phonemic vowel length and quality distinctions (including a contrast between open and close e and o) that are barely shown in everyday spelling, leaving the engine to infer the right vowel timbre from context. Slovenian's compact size belies real dialectal fragmentation — it has one of the densest dialect landscapes in Europe — so synthetic voices target the standard literary norm used in broadcasting, schooling and government rather than any regional pronunciation. Practical users include Slovenian public broadcasters and accessibility services, the education sector teaching a language with notoriously intricate morphology, and EU-institution and cross-border communication where Slovenian is an official working language.
