For persistence of effort in the. face of adversity no enterprise
in the history
of exploration was more remarkable than
England’s search for the northern passages to the Far
East.
The inspiration for the search was the hope of sharing in the
riches of oriental commerce. In the tropical .regions of the Far
East were situated, Roger Barlow wrote in 1541, “the most
richest londes and ilondes in the the worlde, for all the golde,
spices, aromatikes and pretiose sto
