When I was 15, my dad gave my mom an ultimatum — she had to choose between him and me. All of this started because I refused to give him my email password. He wanted to change it so he could control who I talked to after I switched schools. Basically, he wanted to cut me off from my friends. My mom didn’t even think twice. She told me to leave. It was the middle of winter. I didn’t have a coat, no plan, no place to go. I just wandered around the town in the freezing cold until I couldn’t take
