Pāhonoa te oro

Slavery existed in Africa, but it was nothing like the racial, hereditary, dehumanizing slavery that developed in the Americas. African captives could marry, own property, and sometimes rise in status. Nothing in Africa resembled the plantation system that would later define the American South.
