Before trading the ammo, they’d toss the bullets into boiling water and cook them for a long time. The idea was that the heat would damage the gunpowder inside, making the bullets useless. That way they could still get food… but hopefully stop those same bullets from ever being used against their own guys. Pretty desperate times called for some seriously desperate ideas
