German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt began excavating this site in 1995. What he uncovered
over the following two decades forced a complete revision of the timeline of human civilization.
Radiocarbon dating places construction between 9600 and 8200 BCE. That is 11,600 years
ago. It predates Stonehenge by more than six thousand years. It predates the Egyptian
pyramids by seven thousand. It predates agriculture.
