Sarah raised the broken stick with shaking hands and swung wildly. It struck the wolf’s shoulder, but it barely slowed it. The animal pushed forward, forcing her back against the cave wall. Her breathing broke. Short. Fast. She had nowhere left to go. The wolf lowered its head, muscles tightening. Ready to finish it. Footsteps. Fast. Outside. The wolf paused. Only for a second—but that second mattered. “Sarah!”
