When Julius Caesar's lifeless body lay at the base of the statue of Pompey the Great, the conspirators believed they had just saved Rome. They truly believed it. These senators, men who loved the Republic, thought that by removing the tyrant Caesar, they would restore order, bring back true republican rule, and heal a fractured nation.
