In the mid-1960s, about 40 percent of American adults smoked cigarettes. By 2006, the figure was only 20.6 percent. According to the most recent estimates from the National Health Interview Survey, only 12.6 percent of American adults smoked in 2021 (Adjaye-Gbewonyo and Boersma 2022).
