Gutters and Downpipes The roof keeps the rain out, but where does the water go? It goes into the gutters. Gutters are open channels attached to the edge of the roof. They catch the water as it runs off. The water then goes into downpipes. Downpipes are vertical pipes that carry the water down to the ground. From there, it goes into the drainage system.
