Soon, Betty Marie's teachers told her she had to choose between ballet and piano. It was the only way she could develop her talent. She enjoyed both, but decided that she loved ballet more. When she was a teenager, she joined a Russian ballet group and changed her name. She thought Maria sounded more like a Russian name. She did not give up her Indian name, Tallchief.
