Jessie didn’t stop running until his legs felt like they were going to give out beneath him.
Branches clawed at his arms, rocks slipped under his boots, but he didn’t slow—not with Sarah leaning against him, her weight growing heavier with every step. “Jessie…” her voice was faint now. “I can’t…”
“You can,” he said quickly, tightening his grip. “You can. Just a little further.”
The gunshots had stopped.
