Long before European settlers arrived, the land was home to the Wampanoag people. The swamp was considered a sacred but dangerous place. According to some traditions, it was believed to be a location where powerful spirits or supernatural forces lived. In the 1600s, tensions between English colonists and Native Americans grew, eventually leading to the violent conflict known as King Philip's War. The war was led by the Wampanoag leader Metacomet, also known to the colonists as King Philip.
