Chapter 3: The Sounds in the Dark
The night felt different.
Alive.
Every sound seemed louder than it should be. Leaves shifting. Twigs snapping. Something moving somewhere out there.
Tom pressed his back firmly against the tree, trying to stay still.
“It’s just animals,” he whispered to himself. “Just animals.”
But saying it didn’t make it feel true.
